While we all recognise Thanksgiving as an American day of celebration, it’s a great opportunity for all of us to take stock of the things in our lives that we have to be thankful for.
As business owners it’s so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of day to day ‘stuff’ – to focus on all the things we haven’t yet done – all the goals we haven’t yet achieved – forgetting how far we’ve come, all the things we have achieved, all the things we have to be truly thankful for.
So. Many. Things.
Here’s a reminder of what 3 of those things might be…
Your Loyal Customers
Too often we can be so focused on finding new customers that we forget to be grateful for the loyal customers who continue to support us and buy our products or services year after year – providing us with a steady stream of revenue; the same people who’ll also often refer us to others; the people who are the bedrock of our business income. Without these loyal customers our business might struggle to survive.
How often do you remember to say thank you to them? How often do you check in with them to make sure that they are ok in these crazy, unstable times?
Your Great Team
It’s very easy to take our people for granted; to expect the highest standards but then not praise or thank the team when they are achieved. We’re so focused on managing deadlines and dealing with challenges, that we often don’t really see the individuals, who may be working through their own challenges, while still delivering for you.
Often we’ll notice the superstars or the people we’re having trouble with, and they’ll get all of our attention, while the dedicated, hard working individuals, who keep their heads down and just do their job really well, every single day, go unnoticed.
Whether they’re working on the front lines or behind the scenes, every team member contributes to the success of your business. Be grateful for them. Appreciate them both as individuals and as a team. Tell them and show them that you see what they do for your business every day, that you value their contribution, and that you’re thankful for it.
A simple smile, a thank you, a question about the people they love, or the things they love doing outside of work, can go such a long way to making people feel valued.
Your Support Network
As business owners we all need people who support us – a network big or small of partners, suppliers, peers, maybe a mentor, to keep us sane, keep us on track, remind us of how far we’ve come.
We look to this network when times are tough, when we’re struggling, when we can’t see a clear path out of a tricky situation. But they can often be forgotten when the good times come – when business is flying – when we’re busy, become too busy to make time for nurturing these relationships that are so important to our mental, and sometimes physical wellbeing.
Making time to acknowledge and thank these individuals and businesses that support you – letting them know that you’re there for them too – can only strengthen these relationships and increase the bond of mutual respect and trust.
Why not call someone in your support network today?
Our lives move at such a pace, there’s never enough time…unless we make time; unless we make it a priority to step off the hamster wheel now and again - to take a look around us, to truly see others, to recognise who and what we have to be thankful for - to appreciate how lucky we are, to enjoy the moment, and of course, to give Thanks!
