Busting Ghosts & Banishing Ghouls: How to Exorcise Your Business Demons

In the dark corners of every business, there are creatures lurking - unseen - draining productivity and spreading chaos. Creatures that need to be seen…and vanquished!

The Time Vampire:

This fiend loves nothing more than to suck precious minutes, sometimes hours, out of your working day, showing up in unproductive meetings, lengthy email conversations, and key task avoidance.

To defeat the Time Vampire, wield the mighty sword of time management. Schedule shorter, focused meetings, pick up the phone instead of writing long e mails, and complete the tasks that you know are your biggest priority! Guard your time like it’s a prized possession – because it is!

The Phantom of Procrastination:

Close friend of the time vampire, this creature is a master of distraction and delay, whispering sweet procrastinations in your ear, convincing you to put off important tasks until tomorrow and watch a few more Tik Tok videos. Procrastination is a formidable adversary in any business.

To slay this phantom, arm yourself with a clear plan, set achievable goals, and break tasks into bite-sized chunks. Stay accountable, keep your focus sharp, and then reward yourself with a cup of tea (or something stronger) once you’ve slain your procrastination demon for the day.

The Monster of Mis-Communication:

Miscommunication can be a monstrous problem in any business, and this monster thrives on misunderstandings and misinterpretations, haunting your emails, meetings, and conversations, causing chaos.

To exorcise this heinous creature, practice active listening, encourage open communication with the team, and clarify your expectations, using plain English to ensure that you’re all on the same page. Make sure that you’ve created a safe space for your team to express themselves and be sure to deal with any misunderstandings as soon as they occur. Clarity is your silver bullet.

The Systems Spook:

This creature fears structure and consistency, preferring to stick to chaotic, disorganised and outdated ways of working. It drains your business of reliability and hinders any desire you may have for scale.

To defeat the Systems Spook, develop one right way to do everything in your business, and develop a culture of ‘the way we do things round here that delivers consistency for both your team and your customers. Invest in training and automation, and embrace systems and structure as the path to growth and scale.

The Toxic Troll:

This beast gorges itself on negativity, gossip, and ‘politics’, poisoning your workplace and making it an unbearable and unproductive environment. 

To banish this Troll, you need to banish the toxic influences in the team, addressing any conflicts promptly, and demonstrating that you won’t stand for gossip or negativity in your business. Lead by example to promote a positive and inclusive culture, and build a team where respect and kindness are the norm. A happy workplace is a productive one.

 

Let’s face it, every business has its own set of monsters. What’s important is that we each identify our own, and do what we must to keep them at bay. 

So this Halloween, arm yourself with clarity and wisdom, rally your team, and tackle these terrors head-on. With determination and a dose of good humour, you’ll be well on your way to a business where the only creatures lurking are your competitors!
