Delegation: vital for scale, essential for sale

Delegation is a bit like Marmite; you either love it, or you really hate the thought of it.

But whether you’re a fan or not, delegation is a skill every business owner needs to master. Why? Because, quite frankly, you can’t do everything yourself without burning out and losing good team members who want to grow and develop.

The Pros and Cons of Delegation

When you do it well, delegation will free up your time, increase the efficiency of your business, and motivate your team. On the flip side, it can feel like you’re losing control, especially if you’re a bit of a control freak (and let’s face it, most business owners are!). Handing over tasks means trusting someone else to do it as well as, or even better than, you could. That’s a tough pill for many of us to swallow.

The pros are pretty convincing though.

Delegating will:

  • Free up your time to focus on the big picture (you know, the stuff that actually grows your business)
  • Empower your team, giving them a sense of ownership and responsibility
  • Improve efficiency because let’s face it, some tasks take you right out of flow

But if its done poorly – if tasks you don’t like are dumped on someone rather than delegated to them, then you run the risk of:

  • Things not getting done to your standard
  • Confusion if your instructions aren’t clear
  • De-motivation for the team member you dumped on!

Why don’t business owners want to delegate?

To be honest, it’s mostly that struggle to let go, that belief that no one else can do the job as well as they can. There’s also the fear that teaching someone else will take too long – how many times have you heard yourself say ‘I could do it quicker myself’!? And of course, there’s always the worry that mistakes will be made, leading to bigger problems down the line.

But the truth is, holding onto everything keeps you stuck in the weeds, working ridiculous hours, and ultimately limiting your business growth. By trying to do it all, you end up burnt out and missing out on opportunities to scale.

Why Should You Delegate?

Because it’s the only way to grow your business without cloning yourself. Develop the one right way you want ‘your’ tasks to be done, capture it, train it, delegate it, and free yourself to work on your business, not in it. It’s delegation that allows you to step back, plan, and focus on what really matters – without getting bogged down in your day-to-day operations.

What Should You Delegate?

Start with tasks that are repetitive, time-consuming, and don’t need your unique skills. Think admin, routine customer service tasks, or bookkeeping.

As you build trust with your team, start delegating more strategic tasks – things like cash flow management, customer relationship building, and tracking KPIs.

Your ultimate aim should be to replace yourself entirely within the business. This isn’t just helpful; it’s vital for growth and scale, and absolutely essential if you want to sell. A business that runs smoothly without the owner is far more attractive to potential buyers.

Delegation might feel like you’re giving away your secret sauce, but it’s the key to scaling and, more importantly, to making your business a valuable asset that’s ready to sell.
