Positively Spooky: When Friday the 13th meets Positive Thinking Day

This Friday the 13th won’t be a day for dodging ladders, avoiding mirrors, or side-stepping black cats, because this particular Friday 13th is also Positive Thinking Day - a day for optimism, for putting aside negative thoughts, and for seeing your glass as very definitely half full.

It’s a great opportunity to inject a healthy dose of happiness into your life, your team and your business.

Here’s how…

Choose to See the Upside

This Friday 13th, flip the script and look for the opportunities in every challenge or setback. Recognise that things happen for a reason, and there’s always an upside eg. say a big project gets delayed—instead of stressing about it and getting mad, see it as extra time to prepare the groundwork, or maybe to crack on with other work. Seeing the upside like this doesn’t just keep the team motivated; it teaches them to handle setbacks without losing momentum.

Lead by Example

Your attitude as a leader casts a shadow over the whole team, influencing their behaviours and actions – whether that shadow is positive or negative is down to you. Use this day to share a few stories about times when staying positive helped you overcome business hurdles, showing them that your belief in positivity isn’t just talk; it’s a practical strategy that works for you and keeps you sane.

Teach your team to find solutions

We all feel stuck sometimes – feeling overwhelmed by the challenges in front of us. Teach your team to take each challenge one by one, to think through possible solutions and then to take one positive action. Taking that first action to resolve a challenging situation, will often be all that we need to become unstuck!

Make it Safe to Speak Up

Creating a team environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing their ideas and concerns, is crucial. This Friday 13th, make an extra effort to listen and encourage everyone in your team to speak up. Your team will be way more likely to suggest innovative ideas and solutions if they aren’t afraid of being shut down for speaking up.

Reflect and review

A great way to end every week is to get the team together either face to face or online to look back at what’s been done and talk through what went well (yay us!) and what could have gone better. This isn’t a finger pointing session, it’s about learning lessons and growing as a team. Make it a regular thing, and your team will quickly learn to recognise and celebrate their achievements while also learning from their mistakes.

By choosing to focus on positivity, creativity, and resilience in this way, you set a great example for your team, showing them how to turn their challenges and superstitions into opportunities for both personal and team growth.

Let’s make this Friday the 13th not just positively spooky, but positively spectacular!
