When I started to think about International Women's Day this year, I found myself thinking about a young woman who’s been in the press a lot recently thanks to her massively successful world tour, her Super Bowl-winning boyfriend, and her ability to wind up one Donald J Trump and his crazy followers.
Of course, I’m talking about Taylor Swift, who millions adore and many for their own strange reasons, hate. For me though she is the living, breathing embodiment of a number of qualities and values that make her a wonderful role model not just for young girls but for women of all ages:
Resilience
Her ability to ‘shake it off’ when it comes to the haters, the trolls, the stalkers and the people who want to bring her down with fake stories and public shaming, is amazing. Despite all the challenges and public scrutiny, she consistently rises above it all with grace and determination, showing all women the power of perseverance in tough times.
Authenticity
Authenticity is an over-used word, so let’s call it genuineness, which I believe shines through in her music and her public persona. She isn’t afraid to be herself or to share her thoughts and emotions openly – something that really resonates with me, and is inspiring for women from all walks of life, encouraging them to embrace their true selves in every aspect of their life.
A voice for good
Beyond her music, Taylor Swift is a vocal advocate for important social issues, including gender equality and LGBTQ+ rights, using her platform to amplify marginalised voices and encourage meaningful change. An example to every woman, everywhere, of the positive impact you can have and the change you can effect, when you are brave enough to speak up.
Female Solidarity
It’s a sad truth that some women feel threatened by other women who are more successful or attractive than them, and look to put them ‘back in their place’. But what I’ve observed with Taylor is that she is all about female solidarity – actively supporting and uplifting other women in the music industry and beyond. Whether it’s through collaborations or public praise, she demonstrates the strength found in women empowering other women – something all of us can be inspired by
Philanthropy
The Swifties will tell you that their superstar isn’t just about fame and fortune; she gives back too. Through her philanthropic work and acts of kindness, she demonstrate her commitment to making a positive impact in the world. From charitable donations to personal gestures of generosity, she inspires others to give to those less fortunate and make a difference in their communities.
Grounded
Last but by no means least are Taylor Swift’s sense of humour and down-to-earth attitude, which make her relatable to fans of all ages, all over the world. Despite her enormous success – her superstardom – she remains grounded and approachable, a great reminder to girls and women generally, that success doesn’t have to change who you are at heart.
In her own words:
“No matter what happens in life, be good to people. Being good to people is a wonderful legacy to leave behind. We don’t need to share the same opinions as others, but we need to be respectful.”
And there you have it – my case for Taylor Swift the role model.
So this International Women’s Day, why not be a ‘Swiftie for a day’, listening to her music and celebrating the inspirational role model young Taylor is to women around the world.
That’s what I plan to do!
