Scoring Big: 10 top Team building tips from England’s Lionesses

  • Marianne

I don’t know about you, but I loved watching England during the recent World Cup. Yes, it was sad that they didn’t make it all the way to winning it, but they certainly did themselves and their country proud.

I’ve been thinking this week about the challenges they faced before the tournament (losing their captain and several key members of the team) the resilience they showed in overcoming them, and the way their performance developed and grew game by game – and I recognised that there are lessons there that we can all learn from – especially those of us looking to build and develop a high performing team.

  • There is strength in Unity
Just like the Lionesses, every strong team thrives on unity. When players pull on their 3 Lions shirt, they become a unified force pulling together for victory. Similarly, when your team rallies around a common goal and truly believes in it, there’s no stopping the progress you can make. Celebrate each other’s successes and have each other’s backs – that’s the spirit of teamwork!
  • We all have different talents
Have you ever noticed how the Lionesses blend the finesse of their skill with unwavering determination and tenacity – just like a lioness on the hunt? In business, a team with a mix of talents can create magic. Just as a football squad combines defenders, midfielders, and attackers, your business benefits from individuals with
varied skills and viewpoints to tackle different challenges effectively.
  • Strong Leadership
The Lionesses have a captain who leads the way and lifts the team. Similarly, a strong team needs effective leadership to support and guide them. A skilled leader sets the tone, motivates the team, and ensures everyone is on the same page, working together towards that common goal.
  • Practice Makes Progress
You know the old saying “practice makes perfect”? Well it isn’t entirely accurate – perfection is a tough nut to crack. But without a doubt, consistent practice makes progress. The Lionesses didn’t become a force to be reckoned with overnight; it took dedication, sweat, and hours of training. The same applies to your team – investing in their training, honing their skills and consistently encouraging effort can, and will lead to remarkable growth.
  • We learn from setbacks
Every football team faces setbacks – the Lionesses have certainly had plenty, especially pre tournament – and your team will face setbacks too.  What’s important
is how we learn from the setbacks we face. Instead of sulking, feeling sorry for ourselves, blaming others or the world in general, we respond like the Lionesses.  We analyse what went wrong, learn from it, and come back stronger. In business, setbacks are inevitable, but they can be the stepping stones to future success if we work with our team to learn from them.
  • Being ready for change is a Game Changer
Football isn’t scripted, and neither is business. The Lionesses showed us that adaptability is a game-changer. Having a squad capable of filling in for one another, able to step into the breach when the need arises, is way better than having only one player capable of fulfilling every role. Just like in business, the aim is to build a consistent style of play, to develop every member of the team, so that no one player is essential to success. When the sh*t hits the fan and you lose a key player, you want to have another team member ready to replace them.
  • Believe in the seemingly impossible
Even when facing the toughest opponents, the Lionesses believed in their own ability and gave their all to deliver the win. It’s just as important in business, that we have faith in our own abilities and those of our team, and that we push the boundaries of the possible to deliver remarkable achievements.

  • Everyone needs support
The Lionesses had an entire nation cheering them on. Your team needs support too whether that’s their team mates, a mentor, their family and friends, you! Having a network that encourages, advises, and energises them will make a world of difference.
  • Celebrating Wins, Big and Small
Whether it’s a nail-biting win on penalties or a thumping victory, the Lionesses celebrate every triumph. Don’t shy away from celebrating your team’s achievements, whether they’re big milestones or small victories. A pat on the back a warm smile, a big celebration, can all do wonders for team morale.
  • Fun and laughter is the Glue
If you’re a fan, you’ll have seen the Lionesses goofing around in training, having a laugh with each other and their coach. In sport and business, fun can be the invisible glue that holds a team together, easing tension, creating bonds, generally making your workplace a more enjoyable place to be. Make fun a part of your culture and your team will enjoy coming to work with you.

So there you have it! The Lionesses might just ‘kick a ball around’, but they definitely offer us some great lessons in how to build and develop a great team.

From unity to adaptability, they’ve consistently demonstrated the power of teamwork, of having a common goal and having the determination to deliver, as a team, even when the unexpected occurs or the going gets tough.

So whether you’re chasing a football or a business target, learn from these team building lessons and you’ll achieve roaring success.
